Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam (31.8.1919-31.10.2005) a Punjabi writer born to Raj Bibi and Kartar Singh Hitkari in Gujranwala, Pakistan. She was married to Pritam Singh at the age of sixteen but was divorced and had two children.

She worked at Akashwani Delhi, India (1948-1960) but later devoted full time to creative writing.

Though starting as a romantic poet she soon turned progressive and philosophic.

Primarily she was a poet by heart and her prose is also poetic. Amrita was known as voice of woman in Punjabi Literature. She edited Nagmani a monthly literary magazine in Punjabi for many years.

She gave patronage to the budding writers and a large number of young writers were groomed with her motivational blessings. Apart from anthologies of poetry her writings include 28 Novels, 18 Anthologies of Prose, collections of short stories and 16 miscellaneous prose volume. Her works have been translated into Hindi, English and many Indian/Foreign languages. 

Sahitya Akademi Award was given to her on her long poem Sunehre (1956), Later she received Bharartiya Jnanpith for Kagaz te Canvas (1982). She was also nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha (1986-1992). She received Padma Shri (1969) and also Padam Vibhushan (2004) from Government of India. Sahitya Akademi Fellowship was also conferred on her in 2004.
