Sahib Singh (Prof.)
Sahib Singh (Prof.) (16.02.1892-02.09.1977) a Sikh Theologian and Gurbani Grammarian was born to Nihal/Jamna Devi and Hira Chand in village Fattewali, District Sialkot, Pakistan. He was married to Aagya Kaur and after her death, he married Rattan Kaur.
After doing matric he had to take a job in the postal department to overcome the financial hardships of the family. His urge for higher education could be fruitful with the help of some mentors and he got Bachelor degree with distinction in Sanskrit.
He joined Guru Nanak Khalsa College Gujranwala in 1917 as a lecturer in Sanskrit. He also served SGPC as assistant secretary for a short stint. In 1936 he joined Khalsa College Amritsar as a Divinity teacher and retired from this college in 1952. Later on he also served as Principal, Shaheed Sikh Missonary College, Amritsar (1954-1962).
He firstever/identified the rules of Gurbani Grammar and presented his thesis in the form of book in 1932. He also gave the complete intrepretation of Gurbani in a precise and logical way. Thus he evolved the independent hermeneutics of Gurbani and followed it consistently. His collections of articles on religion and ethics also show his deep understanding of the subject.
His pioneer work on Gurbani Grammar bagged a prize of Rs1000/_ from Darbar Sahib committee, Amritsar in 1939. He was also conferred the degree of D.Lit by Punjabi University, Patiala in 1971.
