ਅਰਦਾਸ ਫਾਰਸੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਬੇਨਤੀ) ਤੇ ਦਾਸਤ (ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਾ) ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨਾ। ਅਰਦਾਸ ਜੀਵ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ। ਅਰਦਾਸ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਰੂਪਮਾਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰਿਆਂ, ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਸਿੰਘ-ਸਿੰਘਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਾਰਜ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਵਿਘਨ ਪੂਰਤੀ ਲਈ ਕੇਵਲ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਹੈ। The word ‘Ardas’ means a petition, a memorial or an address to a superior authority. It is a petition of a soul before the supreme Lord. Ardas is a brief manifestation of Sikh History in which Guru Sahib, five beloved ones, Sikh concepts and martyred Sikhs are remembered daily. To pray God for uninterrupted fulfillment of every wish is a custom in Sikhism.
